I ran across news accounts that Bill Gates (of the Microsoft empire), David Rockefeller (bank and oil baron), the United Nations, in cooperation with Northrup-King (the seed giant), and Archer/Daniels/Midland, or ADM, the corporate farming/chemical/seed giant were funding a “saving heirloom seeds” program for “posterity.”
The seeds were collected at considerable expense, and were stored in an enormous concrete vault drilled out of the rock and ice in Antarctica. Something that would survive nuclear war, a meteor impact event, global warming, global ice age (take your pick) or almost any other event. Just in case of disaster, they tell us. I think we’re supposed to believe they’d stand outside the blast doors and hand out seed to the poor starving survivors at no charge or something.
Interesting. Much of the same crowd is also hysterical about the non-existent threat of supposed man-made ‘global warming’ too, though the real danger there lies in the horribly destructive, totalitarian, and expensive “cures” they propose for that false science and conclusion. I think they should return to their guru Paul Erlichs FIRST failed model, which sparked his 1960’s paranoid book “Population Bomb” about the global ICE AGE which would wipe us out and our food supplies by the late 70’s or early 80’s. Oooops. At least that would be easier to sell given global temperature trends now.
Then there is the same kind of growing childish denial and recrimination/retribution against genuine scientists by this same little group of self-appointed “experts” against honest scientists who have uncovered the obvious evidence of intelligent design. Perhaps it is the parallel exposure of the humanist model and the abject failure of Darwin’s theory of evolution that upsets them most. They’ve even turned to embracing outer space aliens as a likely source of life on earth. Anything rather than acknowledging the possibility of God - particularly in light of advances in genetic knowledge of DNA and the function of cells. Now THAT’S out there a ways...
The level of paranoia on these issues is amusing. Now we are afraid there won’t be any seeds. Isn’t this the crowd that claimed the Birchers were paranoid?
They seem just a bit unstable and overzealous. Or is there another, less obvious agenda? Back to food.
My wife and I have been starting heirloom seed in our basement, planting, growing, and saving seeds from previously purchased heirloom seeds for a couple of years now. It occurred to us quite some time ago that genetic alteration and adulteration of basic food might threaten our health. We began seeking organic and natural – or at least a bit less chemically and biologically suspect and questionable food sources.
We also noted the unnerving proprietary statements from Burpee, Northrup-King, and others on their seed packets, plants, and farm supplies, and some of the Frankenfood combinations of genetic meddling that were becoming common in mass-produced food of many kinds. Remember the old commercial, “Don’t Mess With Mother Nature?” Nature may not be MY mother, ( I remember Mom... And believe God is my Maker), but the sentiment is pertinent.
We realized things had changed, and the concept of saving seed for the future had been circumvented already to some degree. Volunteer plants, if they even erupted, were rare now, and even more rarely produced edible food. The legal “copyrights” sought on seed and specific strains eventually would prevent us from legally growing our own vegetables from seed at some point. If the adulterated seeds were even viable. I don’t like being held hostage, forced to purchase THEIR adulterated seed at THEIR price, IF they would sell to us. It’s that old American Independent spirit I suppose, and some confidence that our Maker designed pretty good systems to begin with.
For years my wife and I have also followed with alarm, the increasing spate of USDA and FDA “enforcement” efforts such as numerous raids on health food supplement distributors, and the outlawing of “raw” milk. Raw? Their term, it’s simply milk as the cow produces it, as God designed it, not as a corporate factory mass-produces it, hormones and antibiotics and additives and alterations, and then processes it according to government orders and regulations.
More recently, some existing regulations have been expanded or reinterpreted by government to include private gardens. New rules have actually been proposed in a “big brother” type environment, to “protect” us by expanding already questionable rules on farm production to home and small gardens. Yes, in our governments zeal to “protect...” and control... all the layers and layers of regulation on foodstuffs have begun to exhibit a pattern.
Look around carefully, and you will see that this control tends to move closer and closer to our personal rights and space. It’s a process from the past, in the 20th century it was called “fascism” and more accurately, corporate fascism. It’s a system in which government and select government allied businesses (many times the same people move back and forth from corporate to government positions) control every aspect of life. They may not own everything outright... At least not initially... They simply control every conceivable decision that is made. And this is particularly unnerving where food is concerned.
At some point, ADM, N-K, Monsanto, and the other mega-corporate, multi-national food producers and their government partners will succeed in monopolizing and controlling food supplies. By eliminating competition through regulation, government power, and corporate market control and price pressure, this puts the coalition in a position to control very effectively the entire population, by controlling food. This is the future, if this unhealthy alliance is not checked now.
Outside of the obvious success this consortium is having in destroying much of family and private farming and curtailing or controlling home production (their most independent and effective potential competition) they are also seeking total control by producing seed that is one-generation hybrid which will not reproduce. NK/Monsanto/Burpee/ADM etc. are all producing genetically modified and patented strains, many of which are infertile or incapable of producing subsequent crops. Some of these giants have recently gone to court to punish anyone who attempts to save seed from a crop grown from their seed. Not only that, they even sued people for trying to keep seed INADVERTENTLY FERTILIZED BY WIND-BORNE POLLEN FROM PATENTED SEED IN ADJACENT FIELDS. In an amusing counter-attack, a few of these folks are now counter-suing for “pollution” of their own crops by the patented seed pollen.
If the courts support this nonsense, the impact will allow companies to prevent any saving or use of seed from crops produced by force of law. The alteration of seed, to prevent replanting, to increase yields, and to increase “resistance” to disease, drought, etc. involves genetic alteration. Adding or replacing portions of DNA strands with toxic material from various pesticides and non-food organisms has already altered the food most of us eat in ways we may find later are quite damaging to our health.
One only needs to look around at the massive health problems and growth of cancer and many formerly unknown diseases in the USA, and the prevalence of corn syrup and sweeteners and flavor enhancers in common foodstuffs, or study the massive obesity problems among Americans, especially the young, and we can begin to see some of the impacts.
But the most sinister is the concept of the monopoly of control over our food supply as a whole. Adulterated or not, healthy or not, without food, we die. And people will submit to almost any authority or tyranny when they are hungry enough.
