Battle of the Bulge

On December 16, 1944, Americans and Germans squared off in the Battle of the Bulge. It was Adolf Hitler’s final gamble and last major German offensive on the western front during World War II. Allied forces were caught off guard, resulting in American soldiers suffering the greatest devastation of the war’s battles, with 19,000 troops killed and 61,000 wounded.

A decade later, the Battle of the Bulge is depicted in White Christmas (1954), the now classic holiday movie starring Bing Crosby. In the film, Crosby sings the number one selling Christmas song of all-time, “White Christmas,” on Christmas Eve 1944, to a group of American soldiers taking a break from war as they miss home, family, and friends.
