Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal Squashed By The Senate

This week’s news cycle provided enough content to last all of next month. In short order, Americans found out after a long two years that Russian collusion was a colossal waste of time. Empire actor Jussie Smollett was told he would keep his freedom and his Subway sandwich despite mounting evidence that he lied to authorities. And then it turns out that Stormy Daniels’ ex-lawyer Michael Avenatti will have the opportunity to fulfill his sexual fantasy with handcuffs.

With all of that outlandish news, there is still more news to report. On Monday, March 25, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called the vote to move ahead with the Green New Deal that was touted by freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). Sen. McConnell called the cloture vote on S.J. Res. 8 and the truth was revealed. The motion promptly failed 57-0, with 42 Democrat senators and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) voting “present.”

In the lead up to the vote, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) brilliantly delivered a speech, complete with visual appeal, of how important and serious the Green New Deal is to America. Spoiler: it is not serious at all. Early in the speech, Sen. Lee put up a popular meme depicting President Ronald riding on the back of a velociraptor, which was carrying an American flag.

“This image has as much to do with overcoming communism in the 20th Century, as the Green New Deal has to do with overcoming climate change in the 21st,” Lee said with a deadpan face.

Lee is correct in his assertion and that was represented in the vote count. Even the bill’s ardent supporter Sen. Edward Markey (D-MA) did not vote in favor. But to save face, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that the senators, six of whom are running for president in 2020, voted present “Because I encouraged them to vote present, along w/others.”

The reality is that the whole thing, all $93 trillion, is a joke to everyone but Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, who decided to fire back in true AOC fashion.

During a markup session of several bills during a House Financial Services Committee the next day, Ocasio-Cortez let the world know that she takes climate change seriously and her resolution is not elitist. Watch her comments to get the full effect of her wrath, but here are a few highlights:

“One year ago, I was waitressing in a taco shop in downtown Manhattan. I just got health insurance for the first time a month ago. This is not an elitist issue. This is a quality of life issue.” (No healthcare until one month ago? Did she pay her fines for not choosing Obamacare?)

“You want to tell people that their concern and their desire for clean air and clean water is elitist? Tell that to the kids in the South Bronx [who] are suffering from the highest rates of childhood asthma in the country. Tell that to … Flint [Michigan] … People are dying. They are dying.” (So go talk to Democrat Flint Mayor Karen Weaver about that 36 percent raise she is about to receive and see what she says).

"This is about American lives, and it should not be partisan. Science should not be partisan.” (Agreed, so boys are boys and girls are girls.)

“Because as towns and cities go underwater, as wildfires ravage our communities, we are gong to pay, and we are either gonna decide if we’re gonna pay to react or if we’re gonna pay to be proactive.” (Again, $93 trillion over the next 10 years is the estimation).

“I don’t think so. I don’t think so.”
And that last bit of language is the ultimate issue most people take with Ocasio-Cortez. In her spouting of those words, she demonstrated her arrogance and attitude that she is all-knowing, and must be listened to because she is yelling the loudest and she cares the most. Yet the ideas she puts forth are illogical, incoherent, and some even unconstitutional. But according to her, everyone must listen to what she says. On behalf of America, “I don’t think so.”
