The most prolific serial killer in America currently resides in a correctional institute in Huntingdon, Penn., but hardly anyone knows this fact.

Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer, released on Friday, Oct. 12, is attempting to educate the public about what happened inside the Women’s Medical Society in Philadelphia, Penn., at the hands of Dr. Kermit Gosnell.

In 2013, Gosnell was sentenced to life without parole after being convicted of first-degree murder in the deaths of three babies born alive and then stabbed to death with a scissors, and one count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar, who paid Gosnell to perform an abortion. Gosnell owned and operated the clinic, often serving low-income and minority women seeking to have abortions.

Journalists Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer, brought to light the atrocities at the hands of Gosnell in their book, which became the basis for the movie. Gosnell: The Untold Story of America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer, analyzes and explains court case documents and witness testimonies. The shocking story has been brought to the big screen starring Dean Cain as Detective James Woods, who while conducting a drug raid on the clinic, uncovered the truth of a 30-year killing spree by Gosnell. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Agency, and local law enforcement originally investigated illegal prescription drug sales, but quickly found that something more sinister was happening.

As McElhinney and McAleer said in the book, Gosnell operated a clinic that should never have been allowed to remain open.

Uneducated, semiliterate workers were administering anesthesia, and doing ultrasounds; the clinic was filthy, and two flea-infested cats roamed the procedure rooms, where Gosnell would eat sandwiches. The clinic reused single-use medical equipment. An autoclave sterilizer for abortion instruments didn’t work properly, and a worker who had AIDS hand-washed the instruments. Gosnell would sometimes have a bowl of cereal as he was performing an abortion.
Any other doctor would be shut down immediately upon hearing and subsequently investigating these allegations. But Gosnell was never investigated, despite numerous complaints to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, local authorities, numerous doctors, and even the governor’s office. For 17 years, Gosnell was not inspected. He was left to his own devices, and no one but Gosnell knows how many babies’ lives were taken.

One would think a discovery of this magnitude would be all over the mainstream media, but not in this story. At the trial, media outlets were missing in action, until JD Mullaney captured a photo of the empty pews reserved for them. When the photo went viral, only then did coverage on the horrific actions by Gosnell begin to surface.

Similar to what happened during Gosnell’s trial, no mainstream media outlets are publicizing the movie, interviewing the stars, or bringing to light the truth. Just a handful of movie critics chose to review the movie. And the movie would not have been made possible if not for the efforts of McElhinney and McAleer putting forth the request of public support. Through crowdfunding of nearly 30,000 people, $2.3 million was donated in 45 days. The fervency of the American public who learned of the story was demonstrated in their donations, making the campaign the most successful in the history of the Indiegogo website. Meanwhile, Facebook, National Public Radio, and Kickstarter attempted to silence the movie.

Gosnell is a movie necessary to be shown to teenagers and older. Understanding the gruesome nature that is abortion is the way to open the eyes of those refusing to address it. One of the most powerful scenes in the movie occurred during the trial when an abortion doctor describes exactly how an abortion is performed. The simple description will emote visceral reaction.

Director and actor Nick Searcy said in an interview with FreedomProject that the intent was not to make a gory film, though the actual story is quite ghastly. Without showing the blood, they focused on telling the story.

“The movie is not overtly trying to be political or advance an argument; it’s just telling the facts of what happened in this case,” Searcy said. “But there’s a fear of just knowing what an actual abortion is and what a legal abortion is and what constitutes an illegal abortion.”
